Broke Down Last Night...Please Help

Last night I had to get towed home - 44 miles - $215!! Well, my car ('89 GT) will start and run for a few minutes then bogs and stalls. I'm about 90% sure it's my fuel pump. I think the initial start up gives the car enough gas to run for a few minutes then the pump craps out. What do you guys think? Another reason I think it's the pump is that when I first turn the key, I don't hear the pump as loud as it used to be. Any ideas? If you guys think it's the pump, what do you recommend for a replacement? My car is basically stock but I do have some future mods in mind. Nothing to radical as it's my daily driver. Thanks for any input or advice.

Sounds like the fuel pump or very very clogged fuel filter. You said that you are going to do some little mods to the car so I would get a 155 or 190 gph pump depending on what you are going to do.

And more to come.

Thanks for the quick reply 5oh. I changed my fuel filter about 2 months ago while doing a tune up. Yeah, I was thinking the 155.

Probably wouldn't hurt to check the filter again, it might of had some crap go through it. I think at least a 190lph pump would be in order, and when you remove your old pump, inspect the inside of the tank to make sure there is no crap floating around that could clog your filter or pump pickup.

Good luck!!

We don't know what his mods are. Why do you recommend a 190lph fuel pump? A 155lph pump will support over 400hp. Bigger pumps are not always better. Stock is 88-92lph.

On the note of whats wrong, your fuel pump is burned out. Your pump is overheating and then shutting off. When you wait a few minutes, it'll run again for a few seconds, then overheat. It'll run longer at first startup because of that. The altered sound of the pump is also a very common occurance.

But U never stop modding though. I say go for the 255 cos it will work fine with your stock setup and will accomodate many many more mods. It WILL NOT make U run any richer than usual

Also remember technically 155lph will support 400FW HP which equats to ~340RWHP. BUT under WOT the electrical system is taxed and U do not see 155lph. Actually U will see more like 110lph unless U add the electronic boost a pump.
