Rearend question?

A friend of mine just bought a 1990 5.0 LX(auto.)and the rearend is making a whinning noise. What could cause this? What kind of gear oil(and what weight?) should he use, after repairs? How many qts.?
Thanks!

If it's had gears done could be a bad install, or bad choice of gear manufactorer (spelling?). 3 quarts of royal purple or any good synthetic fluid should be good, w/ 2 bottles of friction modifier (if small bottles from ford). John

He says,it`s supose to be the stock gears.
Should he use 80-90 weight? Plus a bottle of additive,if posi.?
Thanks!
