17" wheels&tires on 88GT?

Does anyone know if I can run 17" wheels & tires on an 88GT without cutting fender wheels? Is there enough clearance when turning so no rubbing? I'm looking at a package of chrome wheels with Nitto tires.

I ran 94 Cobra rims on my old 88GT without any major rubbing. Tire size was 275/40 Nitto DR's out back and 235/45 Falken ZEX 502 in front. The most rubbing occured on full lock turns. The rim would would rub the front A-arm. If you want to check out the fit look in my sig on the snap shot page there is a few pics of my old http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/frown.gif 88.

My car is lowered about 1.5" and I think it rides a little lower than that in the front because of the heavier 351W. I have Cobra R replicas (17x9) with 245/45ZR17s all around. I had to "finesse" the front fender lips to prevent the tires from rubbing on bumps and I was able to shave off the rear fender lips to give the tires room to move.

Tire Rack has a really cool fender lip roller that you can rent which I would recommend getting. I didn't do that but wish I did.

The a-arm rubbing can probably only be cured by getting tubular a-arms. My turbines would even rub after I lowered my car.

You might get a little bit of rubbing on the front with 17's, I would highly recommend not going any bigger than an 8 inch wide rim on the front.

Do it!!!!!

I have a 1988 GT.

Front Cobra 17" * 9 with 235/45/17
Back Cobra 17" * 9 with 275/40/17 http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif

The front is easy, no way it will run anywhere. For the back, I have to flip the quads, that is all!

If you are looking for a place to get rims, e-mail me I sell 4 Cobra R 4 lug for $600 shipped!
