Crankshaft Pulley(Vibration Damper) Removal
 
While replacing the water pump on my 87', 5.0 Mustang, I snapped one of the bolts at the threads. In order to repair it I have to remove the part that separates the water pump and the block. In order to remove that part I have to remove the vibration damper. I tried removing it with a universal puller and also tried the crankshaft bolt but the crankshaft keeps turning. What's the best, easiest way to get the vibration damper off?
Help!

You are trying to remove the timing chain cover. And a harmonic balancer puller has always done the trick for me. I hope you are not trying to use a 3-jaw puller. That is a good way to slip the inertia ring on the balancer.

If you are using A balancer puller and the engine is turning over just put it in gear. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

Even with it in gear, it'll try to turn the wheels, and could be dangerous, just knock it loose, put your ratchet on there, and hit it with a hammer, one of those little mini sledge mallet hammers, worked for me, dont forget the washer thats in the crank snout when you take the bolt out.

How many times do I have to post this before you guys remember?

Mount a socket with a short extension on a breaker bar, and set it on the crank bolt. Rest the breaker bar handle on the ground, on the drivers side of center. Unplug the coil, and bump the starter with the key. Works PERFECT EVERY SINGLE TIME! Don't go anywhere near it with a hammer. Trust me.

That is a cool trick, but what happens if the bolt does not come loose and you have a high-torque mini starter?????

By the way, not that any of you would own a Honda, but if you do, don't try this on it. Honda engines rotate the opposite direction.
