5.0 power
 

I own and 84 5.0 H.O. and it goes pretty good, but its not enough anymore, i was wondering if i could get some little tips to getting more power out of it, i've instaled a super stock coil and 8.8 plug wires and a k&n filter, is there any other cheap tricks to getting more power???

maybe try and advance the timming a couple degrees! that will help your throttle response a bit!, but dont go over if you hear pinging or knocking under full throtle then back it off , i would say you would be safe at about 17 initial!

Advancing the timing is a good one; you'll notice the difference but remember to use 92+ octane gas.

Removing the catalytic converter is an old trick that frees up HP - but only if emissions inspections are not an issue where you live.

Underdrive pullies are about $100. and a good mod. Steeper (3.55 or 3.73) rear gears are a must for improving performance but run near $400. installed. Headers help too of course, for a few hundred more.

Anything you can do lighten the car helps and that includes removing the rear seat, A/C and so on. Hardly worth it to some folks but 100 pounds off the car is around a 1/10 drop in et. Fiberglass hoods save weight but are not cheap.

Unfortunately, the parts that really kill horsepower on an 84 are the heads and exhaust, neither of which are cheap to change. I spent about $1100 including labor to redo my exhaust from the headers back with true dual exhaust.

I wouldn't spend that kinda money. Just pick up a set of used stock 87-93 headers for about $30, an off road H for $100, cross member for $50, and a catback for $170. Add in tax and all the little extras like hangers from Ford and you should be able to add 20-30hp pretty easy to your engine for about $400.

The heads you won't want to mess with until everything else is ready to go into the combo, but a better intake manifold (the 4bbl looks just like a 2bbl) will help you out a little and add some rpm capability.

Try the Weiand Stealth intake manifold, a B303 cam and E7 heads.

I have hooker headers and 2 1/2" exhaust, but i'm lacking the H-pipe. I can get my hands on a basically bran new edlebrock performer rpm intake for $150 and a carter 650cfm carb for $150, are these good prices?

150 for a used intake...hmmm, arent they around that for brand new? i may be wrong, and id shoot for a holley carb, just so much easier to tune, but a 650 cfm is good.

Maybe in the states, i'm from canada, so your $150 intake is a about $275-$300 here. I'm not sure about the holley though, i have one on my car right now, and its junk, i have to set it all the time, and i heard that carter had good carbs

oic, yea the carter is good, but the holley is too, yours may need a rebuild, i know a brand new one out of a box, will run good for a long time, but expensive. good luck

I agree with unit; you have an exhaust restriction in that model year, and that should be one of the first things you look at. Beyond that, the heads are signifigantly restricting your power, but you don't sound like you're ready to swap those yet. The other things I woul suggest are underdrive pulleys and rear gears (3.73's).
