how many horses will a production 302 block stand?
Just curious if i went with a 347 stroker and vortech s trim if the production block would still handle the horses with a main girdle.

It should handle over 600 flywheel hp if you keep the revs below about 6200 and avoid detonation.

That is impossible to say for sure. I would say it would depend how you drive it and how the tune is. I have read about blocks handling more that 600hp with good tune but with anywhere near that much power your going to break something sometime. I would recommend if your going to build a stroker motor, get a stronger block so that you don't have to worry about replacing it all if it splits a block.

I went with a 4 bolt just to be safe....it is a very expensive gamble to have that much power with a stroker. One slip and money is down the drain.

I can't say from personal experience, just from what i've heard. The 347 stroker was never intended to be a high mileage engine, and in my earlier reading about it, I read that 5000 miles was alot to get from one. Now, I know people that have gotten 35k miles, and are still going strong, but none of them were blown. I would have to say it's probably not a great idea, at least not without a stronger block.

In comment to the last post about mileage on strokers....Coast's 347 Street Fighter motor has a 100,000 mile warranty with it.

I just contacted Coast yesterday about their 347 street fighter. It sounds f'n mean......I think I'm leaning towards strokin' it. Dustin, is your 347 from Coast? They list it for $1295, but is there any other changes you need, besides gaskets, bolts etc, that doesn't come w/ the kit? How much of a hp/torque increase should I see?

No, it's not. Well...some of it is. I had the crank from Coast sitting in my garage, and I found the 4 bolt block at a garage sale that some grandpa didn't know what he had....I bought the rods from Coast, and bearings from them too. My melling pump is from Coast, but my rings, pistons and girdle are from D.S.S. You can expect a good 60-75 hp bump if you do it right.

Hey thanks guys. I had heard also that the 347 wasn't a very high mileage kit. But i also read on the 347 street fighter web site that the coast high performance stroker was good for 100,000 miles. But i didn't know that it as a warranty. I've had quite a few problems with blowing head gaskets on my ride and am really tired of it. So I think if i have to go for a new block anyhow i might make the switch to a 351 windsor and get a 351 windsor vortech mounting bracket from alternative auto. They have some good information on their site about strokers and conversions. plus what looks to be a fairly complete list of everything to convert it over to a 351.

I would have to agree with Chris. I wouldn't push it too much. The 2-bolt main plus the thin main caps (at least when compared to a 351) made me think twice before dumping 7K into an engine. But, on the other hand, I read the HotRod issue where they got 800HP out of a stock 302 on the dyno........at least for a few runs. It's hard to hold them together becuase of the crank tending to walk a little. That's why most companies make main cap girdles,right? At least that's what I've been told. Plus, I think it's always a good idea to ask these people if the engine had a tranny and drivetrain hooked up to it when they get these astronomical numbers. I would imagine (maybe someone could comment on this) that a full drivetrain must put some type of physical load pressure on an engine. Plus, let's think about the Ford factory in Dearborn for a minute. If they pumped out blocks that are capable of 500+ horse for a 100K miles why would they build them at under 300hp? As the other guy suggested maybe you should think about a 4 bolt main 302 or a 2 bolt main 351 w/ main cap girdle.

The main webs will probably crank and your engine will blow apart past 500hp. There may be a warranty on the 347, but that warranty doesn't cover a defective block, and I doubt it covers a blown 347.
The Coast 347 kit puts the oil ring out of the wrist pin area, correct? That was one of the major problems with longevity from the 347 kits. Still, throwing a blower to that, then expecting a 2 bolt stock 302 block which is normally expected to handle between 450-500hp to take 600 is beyond what I would consider safe. Even with a girdle. That's just my opinion though. |
well i figured that since I will probably need a new block anyhow, the actual cost of going to a 351 windsor isn't that much more expensive. And the widnsor sportsman block is a pretty good block to begin with. So if i have to get a new block why not go for a windsor and get a vortech mounting bracket from alternative auto.

Now I thik we need to be careful on what we call a "Windsor". "Windsor" is just the name of the plant that produced the 351 small block. The 351 big block was produced in Cleveland. But guess what else was manufactured in Windsor? You got it. The 289 and 302 were produced in Windsor also so be careful when you do your shopping around and watch your words.
