Exhaust rattle? Time for a new one?

My 1990 mustang gt exhaust just started to rattle really loudly the last few days. Its almost to embarrasing to drive. Sounds like its falling apart. To me it sounds like it could be coming from one of my mufflers. Are there parts in their that can fall apart and cause this rattling vibration noise? How long do mufflers last? If I have to replace them should I redo the entire exhaust system, H-pipe, etc. Thanks for the input.

Do you have the stock H-pipe on the car with cats, the Cats have covers and if 1 or more of the weld is shot it makes that sound. I riped the ones off that ratteld on my car. only take the ones on the road side OFF, or just get a new H-pipe http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif And yes it could be the muffer too Jack The car up and look and hear it, Make sure the Car will not move if it is started. Good luck!

It also could be a broken muffler, you might want to check that. The welds might have broke on the pipe going into the muffler.

Mine did that just awhile ago, and my culprit was the heat shield over the cat. As mentioned above, just one of the welds had broke loose. I took it to a muffler shop and the guy zapped it back on real quick. Better than the quick and easy fix, he didn't accept payment for such a simple job! Gotta love that.

The honeycomb inside the catalytic converter might be broken. The best thing to do is start the car & look underneath to see where the sound is coming from. If it is the honeycomb, then you can get it taken off & flushed which means opened & emptied. Hope that helps a bit.

Mine rattles sometimes when it comes loose off the hanger. I just reach under there and push it back on. Good luck, let us know what it was! http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

Another easy fix for loose cat shields is to put a couple of large hose clamps around the cat to hold them tight. Its lasted on our Explorer for over two years now.

Lobster and crab. You're such a dog.

The pieces on my Ouch!! page were all parts I came across while working, except for the V6 with the burned piston (NHRA event) and the block with the sides blown out. That one belonged to a buddy that we race with (Sprints). He wrecked the engine one week, and brought it with him to put on display the next week. Fortunately I had my camera!

Take care,
-Chris
