Tranny kickdown cable

Can any one offer some insight on a tranny kickdown linkage setup for a 68 hardtop, it has a 289 w/ a C-4 tranny. I have just had the tranny done and cannot figure out how the kickdown linkage is to be hooked up to the pedal. I have the kickdown control cable but it seems that it is too short to hook between the kickdown lever on the tranny and the lower throttle setup. I am wondering if I even have the all nessessary parts for this hookup. I have spoken with several tech's about this and they either havent really known what I am talking about, or they tell me that the cable is all I need. Well if the cable is all I need then that's great but I am still miffed as to how it is to be hooked up. I really think I need something else is this a custom type item? I would be greatly appreciative to anyone that can offer some insight.
Thanks,

I want to hook my kick down up too!
I have a little cable for a 66 but I think I need a rod that goes from the carb to the tranny, let me know if you find out.

On my 69 Mach I.. It's just a big s shaped piece of metal.. It's basically the same that's on my 84 bronco.. I'm not sure if 68 back is any different

it's just a cable... should be adjustable..
goes from bottom of carb to tranny,,one end should have a whole for tranny, other should have a threaded section of rod with piece that goes thru whole in the bottom of throttle lever on carb

oh, cant remember if it is possible, but you might check to see if lever was put back on upside down..

I have a '66 w/auto tranny. The downshift linkage is a cable that runs from the accellerator to the transmission shift controls. A lot of Mustangs are missing this peice, but it can be bought from parts dealers.

Why is the cable I ordered only about 9" long, am I missing the s shaped piece??It would never reach the tranny kickdown lever.

Re: Tranny kickdown cable

Perfect guys, I am running into the same situation. I have a '66 that I am putting in a C4, taking out a 3 speed. I have seen the drawings in Chiltons showing what looks like a flat bar coming down off the accellerator pedal and then the cable (the 9" one you guys are talking about) running back to the kickdown lever. That looks like a good setup, but I keep hearing about this bar that runs off the manifold, and have seen pictures of one on later model mustangs, but not 65-66. What is going on? What I would like to do is to weld a piece of flat metal going down from the accel pedal, drill a hole in the bottom and hook the cable to that. The way I figure is if it breaks, then I can replace it with the other setup. But seeing as it isn't a safety issue (I might lose the passing kickdown, but who cares) and the kickdown rods are impossible to find I will try the cheaper method first.

Oh yeah, I think it is californiamustangs has a new accellerator pedal that has theflat bar piece on it, but they want like $90 for it.

Re: Tranny kickdown cable

I just talked with a guy that I trust knows his stuff. What he said is that in 65 mustangs used a linkage with a solid bar. In 66 cars with auto's came with an extra arm sticking down from the accellerator pedal (which is what I have seen). If you have a 66 mustang that doesnt have an extra arm sticking down then your car was originally a standard (which mine is). With that arm sticking down, all you do is hook up the cable (like the scott drake one mentioned) and then hook the other end to the tranny. That is what I am gonna go with. That cable is pretty cheap too, Ithink around $10. Then I can use some flat bar, or maybe small square tube to build my own arm. If someone doesnt' want to do that, here is a link to the website that sells the whole new arm.

P.S. if the link doesn't work/post then message me and I will send it to ya.

I have a 68 Hardtop and I just replaced this cable. It is not the true kick-down cable. It is only for full throtle. Have some one open the throtle to full and move the tranny kick-down lever forward and the cable should fit. It only operated when you put the peddle all the way to the floor.

The kickdown rod can be bought from National Parts depot. www.npdlink.com

If you have the catalog its on pg 105, thats the automatic transmission section.

Re: Tranny kickdown cable

The short cable is correct and it is the kick down cable.

It goes from the linkage on the bottom of the pedal linkage that is attached to the firewall. The other end goes to the kick down lever on the transmission. When the pedal is fully depressed the cable gets pulled and pulls the kick down lever that causes the valve body to force downshift the transmission.
