Carb Problems

A while back my '67 289 2V began giving me fits. It would start OK and then immediately die. Also, after warmed up, it would die every time I stopped with the car in Drive. Beginning about the same time it would sputter and hesitate whenever I tried to kick it into passing gear. I have changed the fuel pump, filter added fuel system cleaner and tinkered with the adjustments and it now starts OK and runs better but still sputters when I try to accelerate into passing gear. A friend suggested that it may be the accelerating pump. Any ideas? Thanx

I dont have any solutions for you but I thought I should tell you that you are not the only one out there with that problem. So, hope we can get the answer. I thought that it is because the engine is cold but it happened when I was driving around too.

Weyne & 69, The accelerator pump can be the problem but don't forget to check for vacuum leaks as well. One good way is spray carb cleaner around the carb while the engine is running it will make the idle change if there is a leak.

Another item to check is your dash pot. It is a little mechanism that works in concert with your throttle linkage. It's also pretty cheap. This may help when you stop the car and it was stalling. Good luck

sounds to me like its carb overhaul time. check your ignition too. but and accelerator pump would cause that and so would the power valve.

and float level too, if your level is too low you'll act like your out of gas and it'l sputter cause you're lean.

Sounds like varnish build up to me.
Buy a rebuild kit and some carb cleaner.
Disassemble, clean and put it back together.
Not a tough job at all.
Good Luck!

Thanks to all who answered. After changing the fuel filter, fuel pump, electronic ignition, cleaning the carb and burning out a starter in the process I located the problem. It turns out that the ignition wire that connects to the switch behind where the key is inserted was frayed. It seems that it heated up as the car was operated and eventually it just cut out. A 10 cent fix to a problem that drove me nuts for a month. Aren't classics fun?

Awww man... I wish I read your post earlier. I just had this same problem with my car a few weeks ago and I spent a small ton of money on replacing fuel components such, rebuilding the carb, and finally buying a new carb, and it was a bad coil. Really sux. I had an extra coil that I just popped in when everything else didn't work and it all came back to life. The problem was exactly as you described it.

... your friend is probably right.. accellerator pump failure is fairlky common on your application.. change the lil bugger & always keep a spare or 2 on hand.. they have a tendancy to crack on a bi-monthly basis.. why?.. i dunno!
