'65 tires
 

For a '65 V8 Mustang optioned with the steel wheels, what brand of tire would have been used? Would the tires have been regular, dual red line or whitewalls? If the original size was 6.95 14", would that equate to a modern P195/75 14"? If I get a modern set of mid priced radials for the steel wheels, would that size be too small?

I have a 66 with the styled steal wheels. I have run both p195 75 r14's and the corresponding p205 think it is a 70 series. I have been much happier with the p205's as they are not quite the pizza cutter tires. I don't remeber what the original brand was but I believe it was firestone. White walls were an option and duel red band's were the high preformance option. In my opinion there is no good reason to use anything but radials unless all you do is show. Hope that helps.

I believe the original bias ply tires were E70-14 which have a 25.8" diameter. 195-75R14's have a 25.5" diameter. The radial tire with the diameter closest to the original tire diameter is the 215-70R14 with a 25.9" diameter.

I have never seen anyone go smaller than 195's.

I've run 215/R70/!4's on my resto-mod '66 and there were no problems. Handled pretty well with these and fairly stiff after market suspension. Not anythig reaembling original, but who cares unless it's a show car?
