67 Mustang Noisy Rearend
I just bought my first Ford, a 67 Mustang for $600.00. I couldn't pass it up. While I was driving it home I heard a whine coming from the rearend. I can't tell if it is the gears or the bearings, it's not the pads. I know little about Fords and was wondering if there is a common weak point in that era of rearends? Any help is appreciated!

First check to make sure there is gear oil in the rear end. Should be level with the plug. Could be bearings in the the rear end or could be rear wheel bearings too. All this stuff is probably 33 years old and so any could need rebuild or replacement. Rear wheel bearings you can probably do yourself except for pressing onto axle. Rear center section rebuild probably reqires a pro. If you do need that consider an ideal gear ratio and a Traction-lock if you're into performance mods at all.

Also, try undoing the u-joint at the rear of the drive shaft and tighten up the pinion bolt. Mine loosend up a few years ago and caused the rear end to whine a lot.

Sounds like a great deal, but...
There is probably a good reason you got the car for $600. If I were you, before I would start sinking money into the car I would do a thorough evaluation of the condition of the car. The biggest thing to worry about is rust. Compared to rust repair all mechanical work is cheap. There was a recent artilce in one of the Mustang mags on common rust areas. You can also search this site and others, such as stangnet and vintage mustangs http://users.ntplx.net/~link/VMF/ for ideas on how to inspect the car. I definitely would not drive the car too far without a comprehensive evaluation of the brakes. HTH |
