Escort seats in a 65 Mustang?
 

I once heard that Escort seats were a direct bolt-in to the early Mustangs. Anybody ever try this? I've decided to start going for comfort in my 65 instead of trying to stay original. I want something with side support to keep me from sliding across the ol' vinyl seat on every turn, but don't want to spend a lot of money, so I thought I might hit some junk yards. If this is possible, does it include all years, or just certain ones? Thanks...

I'm afraid this is going to look really bad even if it fits. I'd give this serious consideration before you do it. Not a flame, just an honest opinion. Anyone else?

I hear the scort seats are a little tall, giving leg clearance problems between the seat and the steering wheel.

I have high backs out of an 86 stang in my 66. You have to transfer your 65 tracks onto them, but its easy. You can even re-drill the holes in seats if you want more legroom (move the tracks back, as I did). I'm 6'1" and I fit without any problems (leg & head). If you are shorter you may be able to leave the 8? tracks on because the bolt pattern (through floor) is the same. They are MUCH more comfortable, and really help when driving aggressively (Autocrossing, etc).

If you like them and they fit go for it. It is your car and you can do to it what ever pleases you. I don't blame you for changing the seats. The 60's low bucket seats have no neck support. We all know what would happen if one gets whiplashed.
As for me I like the original look, and I guess I will compromise my saftey for originality.
Don't take it personally from others, I support you 100%. Those guys may be the same guys that ruin their orininality by installing tacky hood pins, racing RPM guages, overkilling their engines and installing 9 inch 4.11 rearends that make their cars go 4,500 RPMs on cruising speeds, when it is only used as daily driving or for cruising, and not intended for drag racing.

Thanks for the replies. It's been a long time since I even looked at an Escort, so I don't really remember how the seats are. I just heard it was possible, so I thought I would check it out. Trust me, whatever I do, it will be tasteful. Thanks for the link, Jon, I've seen that one before and it looks like a better idea. If anyone is truly concerned about the low back seats and potential for whiplash, there are kits out there to retro fit head rests onto the original seats. Articles have been written on the head rest add on in some of the Mustang mags within the last six or 8 months

How about using the seats from a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe? They should offer some decent lateral support. Whatever you do please let us know. I own a '65 and am considering late model or aftermarket seats.

I found some buckets from a 93 mustang to use in my 66 convertible. I was replacing the extremely uncomfortable and upper back unfriendly bench seat. I didnt have the opportunity to use the original seat tracks but the tracks on the seats did work. It required the relocation of the bolts of the track that fasten it to the floor , which is not to big a deal if you can handle a drill and some other hand tools. I am really happy with the results.
