Putting 84 5.0 in 65 - Help!

I put a 84 5.O motor in my 65 Coupe but I am not sure what type of ignition system to use, I have the distributor that came with the motor but I do not have the module. Should I just buy the module for the 84 from the Ford Dealer and hook it up? What else do I need and what else should I know?

I assume that you are working with a DURASPARK system (remote module) rather than a TFI (module on dist. hsng.)

You will need a module (Duraspark II-Blue Strain Relief)) and the harness from a donor vehicle. FORD Racing Parts also sells a harness and MSD upgrade.

Duraspark Upgrade

KULTULZ, thanks for respondsing. I am a new member and I appreciate the help. I am not sure if its a Duraspark system. I am sure its the stock distributor on the motor. Should I buy the wiring harness as well and how difficult will it be to install? You mentioned an MSD upgrade. Would that be easier?

go with the msd ignition

If the engine came out of a manual transmission car, the distributor will be a Duraspark. If it came out of an automatic car, it will be TFI and cannot be used on your application as TFI is ECM controlled.

You will need to find a Duraspark distributor (used, rebuilt or a billet type) and the harness from a donor car/truck. (Anywheres from 1976 to 1984)

FORD Racing Parts offers a new harness and module. The module is supplied to them by MSD. If you decide to pull the Duraspark system off a donor car, make sure it is a DuraSpark II system as indentified by a blue strain relief where the harness enters the module body.

There was once a website showing how to wire this system into an older chassis, but was taken off. I have a copy of the wiring diagram and also can send you the page out of FRP catalog describing their system upgrade.

E-Mail me and I will be glad to help you further.

why not just get a new Dist.? MSD, Mallory, etc... and drop it in? wouldnt have to worry about the module and harness then ;-)

oh yeah, what tranny are you using? if it's a manual, you'll need an adapter for the for the engine side Z-bar pivot.. the newer blocks dont have the mount cast in.. if you're using an auto, you'll probably need the 50oz flexplate designed for a C-4..the older ones use a 28oz counter balance...

Thanks guys! The donor car had a manual trans so sounds like I will be ok with the dist I have. Now I just need the module and the wiring harness. I will eventually get the MSD, but for now, I just want to get it started. Thanks again.
