390 with a 5 speed (not ordinary)

Ok here is the deal.. I have a 1967 Mustang GT coupe that is an s-code ( only 1546 of these were ever made ) since it is an s-code that means that it HAD a 390 in it.. ( it currently has a 320 + hp 302 in it) NEWays, I am wanting to put a 5-speed behind it for gas milage and a better topspeed, however i am planning on putting a 390 back into the car ( the 390 will deffinately be hot ) what i want to know is if the 5-speed will still fit and be ale to handle the torque.. becuase i am on a tight budget being only 16, i want speed but i also want looks and i don't want to waste money on the tranny if it wont work when i can put in a new interior (cloth) .. I am reading how 5-speeds can cost from 1299 to 2100 i was also looking at a T5 from 5.0 mustangs to put in ... only $600 and i can get the gears for cheap. will a t5 handle it? or will a 5-spped even work

any help appreciated

Nope...won't handle it. If memory serves the T5 is rated at 325 HP.

I would skip doing it, as there will be more conversion parts when you go with the 390. Why not go with a 428 though instead of a 390. Same family FE engine, and it will make better power than the 390. You can do well with the 390, but its not a real performance choice for a motor.

Tranns are rated on torque not HP by the way. and they can hold mroe than you think.

Ain't S codes cool? I have a 67 myself and no, I wouldn't try a T5 swap. I think the T5 was rated UNDER 300 ft/lbs, and that's about the only thing a 390 does well, torque. My 67 Scode was SLOWER than my stock 5.0, but made gobs of nice clouds of tire smoke. Anything can be done with enough money and effort, but not everything SHOULD be done. Mileage and top speed may not be the things you'd be better served looking for out of your classic. FE's are expensive to build NOTHING comes cheap.

But what about the question of, will it work?
I want to put a 5speed behind my 390 in my tow truck. At WFC, I was told only if the truck had a 4speed toploader. Is this the only to make it work? Will a 4speed toploader bellhousing work with today's 5speeds?

Thanks,
Mark
