Lifters
I heard today that if you have hydrolic lifters to tighten the rockers down just until you close the gap between the rocker arm and the pushrod. Is this right because I have mine gapped in my 66 Stang according to the haynes manual. I wasn't sure if it originally came with solid lifters which would explian the gap to me. So do I need to tighten them down.

Tighten it down with both valves closed for that cylindert while rotating the pushrod with your fingers. When you feel resistance, give it 1/4 to 3/4 (depending on who you believe) more of a turn. This slight added amount is supposed to put the hydraulic piston of the lifter in the middle of it's travel where it can adjust for thermal contraction and expansion and wear of the valve train components. It should maintain 0 clearances in the valve train.

I agree with REV. Just be sure you are at TDC on each cylinder and that both valves are closed, completly.

I've put about 40 miles on the engine the way the book told me. Will that have caused a major damage. Everything seems allright.

ZachO, if you adjusted with a little extra clearance (as per solid lifters), it wouldn't really hurt anything for 40 miles. Would make a hell of a racket though, LOL. Just do it the way you now know how to for hydraulic lifters.
