transmission?
I recently bought a 1969 Coupe with a 351 Cleveland in it. The transmission is automatic but I don't know which one. How can I tell what transmission is in it without taking the thing out of the car? Thanks.

If is orignal it is always on the vin number. On the data plate on the drivers side door the number at the top will tell u everything ur car is supposed to be the last one will say trans under it. U is for c-6, W is for c-4, Z fmx .

There's no data plate on the door so I can't find out there. I thought the VIN would tell the engine but not the trans. According to the VIN, the car was originally a 6er but is now a 351C. Is there any code stamped onto the outside of the trans that would tell me?

Maybe this will help.
C-6, is a large aluminum case trans. The bellhousing is integral with the body. Pan is large square with a smaller bump out at the rear. C-4, is a small aluminum case trans. The bellhousing is seperate from the trans body. Pan is small rectangle. FMX, is a cast iron case trans. The bellhousing is usually aluminum and is seperate from the body. The tail housing is also aluminum. Pan is square. |
