Ford only made the Boss 351 in 71, if the motor in your car is not orginal there are a few ways to tell if it is a Boss. The Boss 351's had aluminum intake manifolds, dual vaccum advance on the distributor, dome top pistons, and beefier connecting rods. I think the Boss motors were the only ones to use a square carb mounting flange the rest used a spread bore design. Ford also used 4-bolt main blocks on the 351CJ during these years so you could have one of those.

I have a D2AE-CA listing here mabey it's CA instead of CO.

The D2AE-CA casting number is listed as 71-4V 351C.

Also it is listed as 72-74 351C Boss,71 CJ, HO and 72-74 4V 351's. They are all 4 bolt mains.

Either way it should be a good motor. Check the last 2 letters again the C could look like ab O.

shovelnose:
Where do you have that D2 casting number as a 71 boss 351 listed? I am not trying to be an *** here but D2 corresponds to a 72 and the boss 351 was 71 only item and should carry casting codes no later than D1. The 351 HO is reportadly a boss 351 with hydraulic cam instead of solid lifters (also a boss 351 indicator). This could have a D2 code as could any 73 engine components that had casting used in 72. However like you say, nothing wrong with these other motors, and likey good power.

This is just info from a photo copy of a BB ford book. It states thats the casting #'s are to the best of there knowledge and to measure when in doubt. I do not have alot of exp. with bb ford. I have just bought A 429 and I wanted to know what year it was, so I aquired those casting #'s from a book.

On a side note: I bought a 76 lincon 460. The heads were supposed to be D4(75-78), but they were D3(73-74), 5 less cc. You never know what they do with left over parts at the factory.

Point well taken with those left over parts. Forgot about that and lots of history with new model year mustangs getting left over previous model year parts.
