Electrical problem 1969 Mach 1
I think I have a tough one here. Hopefully someone has the answer.
For the las 3 days I have been noticing that my gas guage was not registering any fuel about half the times I started the car even though I have close to full tank. At the time I did not think much of it, probably a malfunctioning guage or something like that. Well, tonight (very Cold out) when I went to use the car I noticed that not only was the gas guage not functioning but the heater fan was out as well. Oh no ! Now I'm thinking what else is not working. I went through all the Electrical related operations of the car and this is what I found to be Operational and Non Operation. Operational: Headlights, tail lights, brake lights, side marker lights, Instrument guage lights, door courtisy lights, interior lights tilt and away steering and the cigarette lighter Not operating at all since today: Blinkers, wipers, heater blower motor, fuel guage, water temp. guage and the am/fm radio. Other than the Non Operational items, the car starts and drives fine. What I have done to diagnose the problem so far: Checked the fuse panel under dash, it seems ok and all fuses are good. Tested all fuses and box and found that 3 out of the six fuses in the box do not have any power coming in or going out, even when the car is started. The other 3 do have power in and out when car is started. Sounds a little tricky, hopefully some out there has seen a similar situation. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or Fixes to the problem. ------------------ Thanks and Happy Mustang Motoring. Bart |
Just guessing here but it sounds like a bad ignition switch. all the items you said were not working are the ones that shut off when you crank the car then come back on when the switch is returned to the run position. Try wiggling the key with the car running and seee if you can get the stuff to come on. like I said I am just guessing and could be wrong, but I hope that helps.

Thanks everyone. Problem solved. When I got home last night I started the car and wiggled the ignition switch. Suddenly all the non-functioning items came on. I picked up a replacement switch from the local auto supply and now everything is perfect.
Again, Thank you all ! Another problem solved with the help of fellow Mustangers. ------------------ Thanks and Happy Mustang Motoring. Bart 1969 Mach 1, 1965 C-Code Coupe and 1966 T-Code daily driver |
