Need help on heads..302

I am helping my brother rebuild a ford 302 from a 74 falcon. the block and pistonsd are on very good condition but no heads were included in the purchase. Not being familiar with head #'s. Are there any particular heads to keep an eyey open for. I co to a wrecking yard often for parts and would like to be able to ID a good set of heads. The cam he wants to keep stock. (so far) but better heads than stock if we decide to update at a later time. We are going to build the heads ourselves and farm out the machine work.
What years are better than others ,if any?
will 351 neads fit? Gains or losses going with such a adaptation. easy on me. I am a newbie.

Easiest to fing would be E7TE(87-up mustangs and truck 302's).

Harder to find but good to better heads- C8OE-C, DOOE-B, D1TZ-A.

351 Heads work but you need to put sleeves in the head bolt holes as they are larger than 302. Or you need to machine the block to accept the bigger head bolts. Get pre 78 heads as the CC is smaller 60.4 vs 69.

The first letter is the decade C-60's D-70's E-80's. The second number is the year of that decade.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the #'s.
Would I find these cast into the heads under the valve covers? where?

You need to have the intake off and they are under the head in the lifter valley. The number is in the back on the drivers side and in the front on the pas. side. You need a mirror to read them. I like the 385 series as they are on the outside above the exhaust man. in the middle.

Good luck.

Whats the 385 series?
Also will a c-6 tranny fit a c-4 on the block of a 302?

The 385 series is 429/460 engine family.

The modified 351, 400 have the same bellhousing pattern as the 385.

They make C4 with small block and BB bolt patterns. The C-6 is bb pattern and I'm not sure if they make SB pattern. They probably make C-6 for SB in trucks.
