More horses for my pony

I would like to get more hp out of my 68 289. I replaced my stock 2bl with a new Edelbrock 600 4bl but it didn't make that much difference. Next I am going to replace the stock exhaust with dual 3 chamber Flowmasters but I was told that would only give me another 10 to 15 hp. I have a set of old headers but my Dad's friends told me that they regretted putting theirs on and are going back to stock so I guess I won't do that. I have a very limited budget especially after the stuff I mentioned. My 3 speed auto tranny goes through the 1st 2 gears in no time then it gets bogged down and I'm not talking about racing just a little goosing. Oh yeah, I put in a 355 rear end also. Any ideas?

Change your cam. It's a day project under $200 and you will notice a difference I have a 216 @ 484 Intake and it runs great.

If it was me I would go with the 2 chamber Flowmasters. They wont give you much more HP but will make the car louder and I like to be heard when I pull in. Like Zach said change the cam, cam and lifter kit is arround $175 for a good one and that will give you a dramatic increase in HP.

Dave, with a 4V, and cam, you'll need headers to realize the potential. What was your dad's friends objections to headers? They are more prone to leaks and are louder, but add a good bit of performance. BTW, I have 3 chamber Flows with Tri-Y headers and 2 1/2" exhaust. I can't really imagine that anyone wants louder than that for the street. Everyone in the neighborhood knows when I fire mine up.

What kind of intake manifold are you using? Did you get an adapter that allows a 4 barrel to be bolted on to a 2 barrel intake? I don't really like that method. So maybe an intake and the headers plus exhaust would be a good addition right now. Try an RPM manifold, Or the Weind action plus. Then if you want some an extra ump the cam would be nice also. The stock cam on the 289-302 just doesn't cut it. With 184 duration and a .3__ lift.

I agree Fostang, intake and exhaust should be first. Even a Weiand Stealth and a 600 CFM Holley or Road Demon woundn't be too much. The 289 stock heads will limit things quite a bit. He will really need heads, cam, intake, and exhaust to make a lot of power. these things are just all interdependent.

defenitly need to get an aluminum 4 bl intake taht will make a difference. Go withe the headers too. Headers make a bid differnce in geting horspower. U can always go with igniton stuff they are cheap and make a diference. Performance wires, plugs, distributor and maybe and MSD. Can always get pullies too.
