What do I need to beat a 97 SS

A friend of mine just got a 97 Camaro SS 6-speed. I'll eventually race him and I was just curious as to what I need to beat him in the 01 GT. The SS is stock for now and I still have to wait for my car to come in. Can I get low 13's with just bolt-ons and a pair of drag radials??

You won't need to be low 13's to beat a stock LT-1 SS.

Stang_Crazy 06-19-2001 12:19 AM

but by the time we get around to racing, he won't be stock anymore. He said he was stopping when he reached low 13's or high 12's so I figure I would have to run somewhere close to that to hang with him or even beat him.

X-pipe, catback, cold air, 3.73's, pulleys, some DR's, you'll take him. Good luck!

4.10's and some stickier tires, should put you in high 13's, exhaust, pullies, to the mid's

SaleenGTS 06-19-2001 10:30 AM

99GT's run high 13's stock. Lizard King runs 13.60's. Get gears, exhaust, and pullies you should hit 13.30's with a good driver....97SS's run 13.6-13.9's

Not to start a flame, but so what if lizard ran 13.60 once? i ran 13.9 one time in the cooler weater, that doesnt mean im gonna run that everytime i race, consistantly i run low 14's, i would bet lizard could run a consistent 13.9-14.0, but im not gonna speak for him, just saying, i would'nt be too dissapointed if a 00gt can't run 13.3 with grs, pullies, and exhaust, never know driver, altittude, but on a REAL good run, and weather, anything is possible.

fastang 06-19-2001 03:14 PM

I agree, your average new GT runs mid-low 14's. Very few crack consistant 13's.

No flame started, I just have a strong opinion. Just from what I have seen...I have seen many many newer (99+) GT's run 13.80-13.90's at the track. Granted we are at 400 ft and it was in the cooler spring weather. I was just saying that a new GT with gears, exhaust and pullies should run way better than high 13's. Look at it this way. You have a stock 91 5.0 5 sp. You run a 15.0 completely stock. I have seen guys time and time again add gears, exhaust, and pullies that run low low low 14's and high 13's.

That is where my comments come from....hard evidence.

The exhaust will have to wait for now because I don't have the $. The Pulleys are being ordered from Steeda along with a tri-ax shifter and a timing adjuster. The only problem I am having is choosing what gears to go with. I was looking at either 4.10 or maybe 4.30. The car won't do any highway driving. It will maybe, maybe see 55mph during normal driving so the rpm shouldn't be as issue.

I HAVE YET TO SEE A NEW GT 99-01, HELL EVEN ANY NEWER GT BREAK INTO 13'S. But I guess everyone just sucks or something. =P Seriously I would love to see it, not doubtig it, just would love to see it.

In the sweltering heat and humidity of North Carolina, my friends at the strip have seen a 99 Roush stage 2(stock no mods, I know all they are is decorated GT's) run consistant 13.9's.

Speeyuk 06-20-2001 01:50 PM

Hey Bad89, what's that guy in town with the yellow Vorteched Roush run? I've seen him around a few times, and since we're kinda on the subject, figured I'd ask. My friend says he hates imports, or at least VR-4's, so I didn't ask him myself.

Stang crazy, those gears are kind of steep......I hope you don't plan on adding a blower or n2o! If you're gonna go w/ a power adder in the future, I'd stick to 3.55's or 3.73's if I were you.

I'd like to keep it n/a. With the gears, I was going to get a set of Nitto DR's so traction shouldn't be too much of a problem. And who knows...maybe down the line I'll add a supercharger but I can't see that happening anytime soon.
