89 lx vs 88 GTA

I was wondering who would win me or the GTA. Both are stock except the GTA has a flowmaster on it. It has the 350 and I read that it has about the same HP as mine does. I have just heard that the GM thirdgens with a 350 are faster than a mustang. Do I have a shot at beating him.

I've beaten a GTA before by a few car lengths. At the time I had a K&N, underdrive pulleys, headers, off-road pipe, 3-chamber Flowmasters and 3.73 gears.

I don't think a stock 5.0 will take a stock GTA. Get some gears and you'll beat him all day.

Stock, he should win, unless you get a much better jump. If you get gears, get a good launch, the race is yours. You never know - race him and let us know what happens.

onefastlx420 (nice)

If you're running the stock heads you'll get a very noticeable difference. You do need to run some headers specifically designed for the GT-40p heads due to the different spark plug angle.

I'm actually having some problems with my combo right now. I think the cam wasn't installed correctly so I have yet to get the full potential from the heads. Let me know how yours is running when you get it back (it's scary how similar our combos are). I'd like to know what I should be expecting.

Is cocaine-white the stock color from Ford?!

GTA's are slooooowwww!!!!! I had an 88 that I built the heck out of. The 1990 and later L98's run a lot better. They went from early mass air to speed density in 1990. GTA's are heavy cars. They weigh 3500-3600 lbs and have 240 hp. Mine and many other 87-89's ran low 15's stock around 90-92 mph. The later ones ran in the mid-high 14's around 95-96 mph. The advertised hp is not higher, but they do make more power.

All the 5.7's are automatics with the 700R4. They can launch pretty good out of the hole. Mine got 1.8 60 foots on street tires all day long after gears and some motor work.

You should take him. Just be careful on the holeshot. From a roll you walk right by.

Can soneone loan stevstum some slicks or drag radials? You have to buy a 3.55:1 gearset, flowmaster mufflers and get some headers. Dyno tune your stang after. Stock 5.0's make around 180 rear wheel hp. The L98 Camaro/Firebird twins make around 190 rear wheel hp. As long as you can hook and shift that T5, you'll win. Buy the parts just in case he has some mods he didn't tell you about. Good Luck!!!

Dude, if you are both stock you won't have any problem...in the 80s the mustangs (especially the LXs) were the king of the street. That GTA is very heavy and you have as much hp but much lighter than even a GT. With traction and equal drivers you will get at least 1/2 car on him

DISCLAIMER:
What color is it? Why does this make a difference? Well...1989 was the 20th anniversary of the T/A and a very few limited numbers of GTA (ALL WHITE) got the Buick Grand National Turbo'd V6. those things were MUCH faster than the 350 V8s....I can't tell from your post if you are SURE it's a 350 or are just assuming. Don't assume...find out.

Good luck

Mike

[b]edit: my bad...you said 89 LX and 88[/]GTA...got the years mixed up....in that case..shouldn't be a problem

Yea those buick v6 gta's are rare i believe, but they are straight up wicked, and can run high 12's on an auto, but i bet it's a 350.

And stock, or just exhaust, i know id spank the hell outta him, the mustang was king in the 80's like said above, just run one and find out.

I remember seeing those 89 pace car T/A's a few times at the track in the "old days" They were in the low 13's back in 1990 or so. And for you kiddies, A low 13 second street car was pretty damn rare back then. A low 13 stocker was unheard of.

I just saw one actually the last time I went to the track. It was going around 13.1-13.3 105.
