90 lx AOD, 351

If I were to put a 351 in my car making about 400hp, would I be able to get by with the stock AOD and a new torque converter?

can anyone help?

That stock aod will not hold up. You need to have it beef up or install a t-5. If that is 400hp at the rear wheels a world class t-5 would be the way to go.

Depends on how you drive it. The first thing to go will be the OD band, maybe the input shaft. If you want to run an AOD, look into getting a Lentech. They're strong and built to last.

Reguardless, to run right, an AOD need a shift kit, a converter, gears in the back, and a good tranny cooler. Even with this, if you drive it hard, you will likely break something sometime.

i think i'll just put a t-5, how hard is that swap? What about a tremec or something?

I have a GER AOD with a stallion converter and it has performed well. This is the cheapest way to have a bullutproof AOD combo.

www.baumannengineering.com has lots of good Ford auto trans tech info.AOD's can be built, but other options are better - i.e. AOD/E with electric control box, or Lentech w/their 10" lockup converter. also check lentech's valve bodies.
