Sounds like you will have to drop out the tranny to fix this. Going in through the console only gives you access to the shifter. There is only a turret rod under there with a ball socket for the shifter. BTW to get the front bolts for the inner boot, use a dremel tool to cut away part of the console ( of course only the part covered by the leather boot trim piece), then you can get those suckers. I was not able to get bolts back in there after installing my MAC shifter.
It sounds like internal problems in the trans, possibly a bent shifter fork courtesy of those 2-3 shifts, I had mine rebuilt for $575 carry in and out, and it was totally wasted at the time. You may fair better
