Well I am sure SMW could build it for you for that price. It all depends on what else you put into it, and what you supply him with. He won't B/S you, but he does have a reputation to keep up so he will of course recomend the best, but he will do what you want. Machine work is the most expensive part of setting up the bottom end, so a fresh block or something that needs little work would be best. He doesn't have a stock of fresh 302's so you might need to supply him with it.
Actually DSS, CCM, and places like that have very good prices for low level power combo long blocks. SMW just set up a 350 Chevy for me last month. I gave him the block, crank, rods, pistons, and heads. Everything was in spec so it didn't need to be machined. All we did was clean it all up, turn down the stock crank, gave it a ring job and have it balanced. We also did a roller cam conversion. The cam conversion was $650 but thats not anything you would need to do. I paid $1809 for everything, but I had most of the parts for it to begin with. I also put it together myself. So subtract the $650 for the roller cam conversion and add the price of heads and you have about $1900 for a long block.
If your interested in talking to SMW let me know and I can give you the number.
Steve
