Welcome to the club Chip!! I have the same thing going on with my '88GT. Since the T-5 is notorious for synchros going bad then I would say that's the problem. The only way you are going to be able to adjust your clutch is if you have an adjustable clutch quadrant set up.
My advice is to save the cash and install a TKO T-5 tranny and don't bother with a stock tranny anymore. You could still sell your old tranny for a few bucks towards the new one. I am sure someone would pick take it off your hands if the price was right.
That's just my opinion though. That's what I am going to do.
