black281 pretty much answered your questions. Just remember more timing is not always better, our cars stop making more power at 15* or so after that you start to lose power. I've had mine up as high as 18* on the dyno with 93 octane with not detonation but the car made the same power as it did at 10*. 14-15* was nearly identical on the dyno so that is where I tend to keep it set at.

Gears are something you want a professional installer to do unless you've done that job before. I get mine done for $175 locally but average seems to be in the $200-250 range usually. If you know someone that works at Ford they sometimes will do the job on the side for pretty cheap.
