Although Mach 1 and others have had no ill effects from changing back and forth, I have read that switching from synthetic to standard, in an engine that is used to synthetic, can have negative effects. I can't back that up scientifically, though.

I feel the same way when I'm shelling out $25 for oil and at least $5 for a filter, BUT when I get home and do the oil change, I'm glad I bought it.
My car has had Mobil 1 in it from the begining (according to the original owner) and runs good at 117,000 miles. It does burn about a quart when I am on a long 500 mile trip, but I can't complain.
I have also heard that if you use synthetic for a certain amount of time, then you should not switch back. However, I don't have any scientific evidence to support that either, but if I find some, I will post it.
I could run a viscosity test in the lab and compare the two, but I don't think I'll have enough time to do it this semester.
