One more time:

The easiest way to make sure you are on the compression stroke is to stick a wadded up paper napkin into the #1 spark plug hole, and rotate the engine. When the napkin pops out, you are on the compression stroke. Continue rotating the engine by hand until the timing marks line up (shouldn't have to turn it very much). Line up the timing marks at 10 degrees, and make sure the rotor is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire.

Simple.
