Actually, I was really close to 9,000rpms once too.

I was ticked off one night (really ticked off) and I was on my way home in my old 88GT. I had just topped it out in 3rd and was looking to shift it into 4th, and just coast down. Instead I got it into 2nd!!!! The tires howled and the tach just flew. I was back on the clutch, but everything was fully engaged. My estimate was probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 8500rpms anyway.

I certainly wouldn't want to try to get it there under it's own power though. The top of the line 302's that were used a few years back ran up to 11,000rpm on the F1 or something like that. They were allowed to compete under the displacement rule for 2V engines. The 5.0 was set into an all American chassis to form an all American entry. The other car that team used was powered by the Aurora's DOHC engine. The 302 won the only race they entered it into.
