I think what you're describing is sound deadener, if that's the case, leave it there. The air silencer can be seen if you remove the stock air filter and look through the hole behind the air filter. If you see the sound deadener through the hole where the air filter system draws its air, the air silencer has already been removed. If a black plastic apparatus is seen with a elbow of sorts facing forward, that the silencer.

BTW---They can be a PIA to remove, but the rewards of a small HP gain and cool intake sound are well worth it.
