Forged pistons are more dense, which is why they are stronger.

The Hypereutic Cast pistons are basically just poured into a mold, so since they don't undergo the forging process they are less dense and therefore lighter.

Hyper pistons allow for better oil control, which helps emissions, and that's why Ford went to them over the forged units.
