It has a PCV (positive crankcase ventillation ) valve on it and that's about all for emissions control. If it smells like gas at the tail pipe, you're probaly running rich to some extent. Is that at idle? Must be for you to smell it. Might need a carb adjustment or even a rebuild.

Some slight gear noise in 1st and 2nd is probably OK. If it's major noise, and if the tranny is original then you may need a rebuild, but who knows. First off, drain and replace the gear oil in the tranny to the correct level. Any trans shop can do that cheaply. That might even fix it if the oil is low, or worse , empty. Check the rear differential while you're there. We are talking 37 years old here.
