Could be the tranny slipping. Either the torque converter, clutches, or bands could cause this. You said it seemed like the tranny holding you back. 71grande, that could be the cause.

66StangGuy, if you have a 2.80 and a C-4 and you're turning 5000 RPM at 80 in 3 rd gear, then it's almost for sure that the tranny is slipping.
