I think a well built 289 is the way to go. I happen to know a great mechnic who could build a sweet motor for that car, at a price of course. But it would be done right, and the car would haul behind.
When you get another motor, grab an electric fan, and decent shroud. It will help keep the car cool better, and I would take a good look at the radiator.
There is a reason there are so many '65-'66 cars still around. Now don't make me drive up there and save that car from certain death at the hands of your Porsche loving Fiancee. (By the way, my first car was an '83 944.)
