He doesn't have to. Just make sure that gear gets changed before the distributor goes in. Chewed up pieces of cast iron floating around your valvetrain isn't a whole lot of fun.

Yeah, that wouldn't be a good thing.

I had pieces of metal from the cam cover in my first engine, caused a horrible oil leak. Took that in to find out what was wrong w/ it. That was the original 289. The previous owner messed it up when he put a new cam shaft in.
