I got a picture of the factory setup but I can't get it to load, so I'll do my best in text.
Here's how the factory setup is: c=clutch s=spacer sh=shim
spider gear-->C/ S / S /C/ S / S /C/.035"shim (your shim size may differ)
Here's how I put mine back together:
spider gear-->C/ S /C/ S /C/ S /C/.035" shim
Total measure of the factory setup is .655" on each side.
Total measure of my setup is .675" on each side.
Which is to say that I tightened up each side by .020" over the factory specs. Since my clutches were worn so bad I actually went .032 (on each side) over the tired clutchpack that was in there. (Remeasured the old clutches this evening)
I tried a .040" shim, but I couldn't get it together so I settled for the .035". I've also got 1 extra clutch and 1 less spacer.
Try it with the thickest shim you can get in there and work you way down 'til you get the assembly to roll back into the carrier.

BTW: The Ford rebuild kit only comes with 6 clutches. You need to get an extra kit unless you can find the clutches separately.
