Is the bearing the problem? Is it froze up? Does it roll freely, just has pits. It is often that a noise will travel. It will make you swear that the problem is in a diffferant location. Does the car feel like something is actually slowing you down? My fan clutch just finished driving me crazy. Changed the belt, tensioner pully, almost changed the water pump. If the pinion turns free, put it all back together, every time you add a piece, roll it again. When it is complete if it rolls free, it is not the rear end.
