11.5's..... hummmm You realize that Civics with 2.2 liter engines are running 11.5's and getting 20+ MPG??????
I would stroke the 5.0 to 347 cubic inches, run the Trick Flow R type heads and one of their matching roller camshafts. You can expect about 575 horsepower at 6,500 RPM and you will be playing with 10 second quarter miles after if you take the time to get the chassis set up properly.
Vortec stuff is awesome. But remember that the heads are where the rubber meats the road. The TFS R head mounted to a 427 stroker 351 W produced 641 HP on GAS ALONE. You might consider this for the newer Mustang chassis since you are trying to move 3,600 lbs down the quarter mile. A 5.0 will get you 12's but a 351 W might push you to the 11's.
You can plan to spend about 3,000 dollars for a supercharger system, and you will have to bolt that up. After paying the cold hard cash, it will still not run as fast as a prepared engine running the TFS R heads.
I saw a 5.0 last night with an E-Cam, 3.73 gears and T-5 run 12.25 ET's and brag about how fast it was. Minutes later a 1.7 liter RX-7 with twin turbochargers ran a 10.95 et on gasoline. With Nitrous boost this car would be toying with 10.4's or faster.
I am telling you right now that a blower is not necessarily the best way to roll. It simply shifts your problems into a more difficult to solve arena. Do you have access to a dyno? Do you have an unlimited budget and patience to deal with shops that claim to know how to do the work but only know how to wrench on some bolt on items.
A nicely built 351W with long rods, TFS R heads, a street/strip roller cam, and 5 speed with 3.90 to 4.10 gear should get you somewhere near the low 11['s. It will be fairly simple to add a NOS fogger system at under 700.00 dollars should you want to run it in the high 10's.
Spend your money wisely, and remember there are Honda Civics and VW Beetles running 9's with less than 2,500 CC engines.
It is solid engineering that gets you the speed. A supercharger alone is just a tool to up your horsepower. But are you married to the dyno tech? If not you will be running low to mid 12's thinking you are fast. STUDY BEFORE YOU SPEND!
