Check the wire exiting the coil for a broken conductor, this can be discovered as easy as burnt silicon material in the vicinity of the broken conductor causing an arcing effect. if the conductor has split inside the insulation of the wire, you may not noitice it. Try out your buddy's coil to distributor lead/wire. And as always be safe when working around such high voltages. You won't like getting hit with a nice surge of coil increased voltage.
