Do a little more research and you will see that the mk2 diff isn't as weak as you would think. I'm not saying mine has held that power yet, but it will soon. The only major problem with the diff, is that around 300whp, the lsd's(clutch type from the factory) don't really handle it. That is an easy fix though....several companies make gear type or upgraded clutch lsd's for the diff in the mk2. The 4.30 came stock in p-type mk2's in the states...extremely rare like you said, but they are out there. I am going to be switching to the 3.27 after I am finished with my motor build....won't have much use for the 4.30's with boost.

Your friend having his I6 supra's tranny blow isn't the norm. My transmission can handle over 300hp in stock form, but that is about the limit. All I have to do to be able to handle 600+hp is switch to the input shaft for a 93+ supra 5 speed and switch to the 93+ synchros.
