Instead of using the rheostat, just install a timing retard module from MSD. It has a start retard function built in, plus three progressive timing retard settings (uses the chips). When I activate my converter lockup in third gear, I have it pull some timing from the motor. Stick guys could easily put a little microswitch on the shifter so when they hit fourth gear it does the same thing. Pulling a few degrees of timing at the big end does help.
