The speed density cars are indeed faster in stock form. The stock MAF is restrictive, and the 87 and 88 motors also had a more agressive stock cam ( people forget that in comparisons)

If you upgrade to a larger MAF, you already have a Mass air computer, and it should run just fine that way. The mass air cars are easier to tune, and change calibrations for different injector sizes. Also automatically adjusts for intake, head or exhaust changes. The SD guys have come pretty far, but it involves more tricks and work than it seems. To keep the car SD would involve finding a wire harness ( if it was changed) and computer from a HO SD motor, since you mentioned you have a non HO motor in there. Seems easier to go to MAF in your case
