That's pretty much what I was saying. I've seen it happen a lot. Especially when someone cracks the post seal on their battery, and the acid starts to eat at the cable. People think that wiping the white fluff off is all they need to do, but in fact the battery and the cable must be replaced. Just a little FYI.
