Default Hurst vs. inner shift boot battle

I got a hurst shifter awhile ago and still am not really happy with it. It seems awefully "notchy" to get into gear, and it ate my inner shift boot. So, I replaced the inner shift boot and noticed that, no joke this thing is eating my inner shift boot. WHY!? I noticed it's getting pinched between the stop and the handle. What's up? Is there something obvious that I'm missing?

I am installing an adj. cable/quad soon, it needs it. Will this help remedy the "notchyness", and how do I know that the stops are adjusted correctly? It's not popping out of gear or anything, sometimes it just takes a little coersion.

Thanks.

Rob
