My '85 GT came with a 7.5 inch rear, so I went thru both a rear end swap and gear swap. If you think you might want to change rear control arms, I would suggest doing them when you do the rear end. It's much easier to do them all at once. I say it took me about 4 hours to get the rear and the control arms swapped. the hardest part was getting the driveshaft disconnected. Those bolts were on tight! I had to use a long 12cm wrench, then use my floor jack to push the wrench in order to crack them loose. After that, it was a snap.
I paid a local shop to install the 3.55s into my new 8.8 inch rear. He charged me $150 to do it, and I already had the gears. And he said it was easier to do with the rear in the car first, so I did the rear swap then the gears, just FYI.
