Default '98 Trans Am goes down

Cruising beltway 8 feeder roads in Houston, I spied a white Trans Am in my mirror. He was driving conservatively, so I slowed a little to let him catch up. It was a young guy with his gf in the car. Sure enough we caught a light and he changed lanes to get next to me. I looked over and smiled at the gf, but didn't rev at him. I wasn't sure if would go or not so I just started off at half throttle so I wouldn't look like a complete @$$ if he didn't go.

Well he came up even and punched it. I was ready and nailed it just after he did. He did have a slight advantage going first but we stayed almost even through 1st with me having maybe 1/2 lenth on him. All the way through 2nd I opened up the lead, shifted to 3rd and still on it I had 3 or 4 lengths on him when he shut down at 80-85 or so.

He was very cool and came next to me with a thumbs up. At the next light we were in traffic and next to each other. I rolled down my window and asked the gf what year it was. That's the only way I know it was a '98. They are rated at 305 hp and 335 ft./lbs. I've heard that they are rated conservatively. I imagine the race wt. with the gf and him was 3500-3600 lbs., so it's not too surprising that I got him. Just not used to beating LS1's by that much. I think it would have been more if I had nailed out of the hole.
