I used the rust remover and steel wool technique on my 98 GT's tailpipes this past weekend, to remove the road grime and the little bit of surface rust. It worked like a charm and the pipes look very nice again.

I've seen painted exhaust pieces and in my opinion they will end up getting dinged and scratched and look worse than they are now.
