it could be the cable or the starter. does the motor fire fast or does it crank for a second or two before it starts. If the cable is in bad condition then i would definatly change that first and then see what happens. if it smokes again then replace the starter. at least this way you know for sure what it is. also make sure that the connections are clean and secure. a bad connection will spark and smoke a little when you try to start the car.
