Default Electrical question

OK, I have a general troubleshooting question. Specifically, I am going to be troubleshooting some of the lighting on my car, (fog lights and interior) I picked up a multimeter for the task ahead, and have a basic understanding of wiring, but what is the best way to test a "dead" or unconnected circut?
Example: for the fog lights, I want to test the underhood wiring from the harness to the lights. Since I am going to be removing the + current side, what setting on the multimeter is used to put a test current through the harness?Assuming that I use the body as ground (since the fog lights are grounded to the body).
Or am I way off base here?

Thanks in advance
J
